You’ve secured your new home in Tarneit. Exciting! But before the truck pulls up, there’s a checklist most people don’t think about until it’s too late. Here’s what experienced local movers recommend you sort out before moving day.
01. Book Your Removalist Early — Especially at Month-End
Tarneit is one of Australia’s fastest-growing suburbs, which means moving day demand is high — particularly at the end of the month when settlements and lease changeovers cluster together. Tarneit recorded over 1,666 property sales in a single year, meaning the area sees a constant wave of new residents moving in. Book your removalist at least 2–3 weeks out, and further ahead if you’re moving on a Friday or the last day of the month.
02. Notify Your Utilities and Change Your Address
It sounds obvious, but it’s one of the most commonly forgotten tasks. Before moving day, update your address with:
- Australia Post (mail redirection)
- Your electricity, gas, and internet providers
- Your bank and insurance companies
- Medicare, ATO, and VicRoads
- Your employer and super fund
Allow 5–7 business days for utility connections to be active at your new Tarneit address.
03. Check Your Estate’s Access Requirements
Tarneit’s master-planned estates — including The Grove, Bluestone, Westbrook, and Riverdale Village — often have specific access points for large vehicles. Some have boom gates, narrow driveways, or weight restrictions. Contact your estate manager or builder ahead of time and pass on any access details to your removalist so there are no delays on the day.
04. Measure Before You Move
Although new homes in Tarneit often have modern open-plan designs, this doesn’t ensure they will fit every piece of furniture. Doorways, staircases and hallways will all be measured prior to your move day and are particularly important for larger items, such as sofas, wardrobes and bed frames. When it doesn’t fit, it’s much better to know in advance.
05. Create a “First Night” Box to contain first aid supplies.
Your removalists will get everything off your truck, but you won’t be unpacking everything on day one — and you don’t need to. On the first day or two, pack a special box (or bag) that contains all the supplies you will need for your first 24 hours:
- Phone charger and laptop
- Toiletries and a change of clothes.
- Bedding and pillows
Basic kitchen items include a kettle, a few plates and mugs.

06. Get to know your neighbourhood.
Tarneit has a friendly community because of local festivals, sporting clubs, cultural events and neighbourhood events. After you have settled, you can get to know your neighbours by logging on to your estate’s Facebook group or community app (most of Tarneit’s estates have an online community; it’s a fantastic way to know about people and get tips and recommendations from other tradespersons).
07. Confirm Your Removalist the day before.
Contact your removalist the previous day to ensure that they arrive on schedule, state your address (including the estate name), and provide any notes about parking or access. Most miscommunications on a moving day can be avoided with a quick 5-minute phone call.
